Dead Island Sequel to Retail for $50

In a surprise move, the publisher Deep Silver have announced that their upcoming game Dead Island: Riptide will sell for less than the usual video game RRP, a whole $10 less.

IGN reports that this information comes from Deep Silver’s Aubrey Norris. Ms. Norris stated that the price is “not a placeholder” and that Dead Island: Riptide, whilst “not a remake” of the original Dead Island game, will still be sold at $50 due to the expected release date being so close to “the end of a console cycle.” Not much else is know about the sequel to Dead Island. What we do know is that it is coming out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Whist $10 may not sound like a whole lot of money, if you look at the bigger picture, it very well could be. Could this move by Deep Silver be a trend setter within the video games industry? Many gamers won’t be as will to pay out $60 or £40 pound for a brand new game that is coming out for a platform at the end of it’s life cycle. If publishers want to ensure their games sell, a price drop at launch is probably the right idea, especially when platforms such as the Xbox 360 only has a year or two left before we see the next generation of consoles swooping in.
