Game Informer Cover Hints at Next Gears of War Instalment, Prequel?

The below image is the cover of Game Informer’s July issue. If you couldn’t tell, it’s about the next instalment of Epic’s Gears of War franchise.

No solid details have been released, so let’s get the rumour mill spinning shall we? If you’re familiar at all with Gears of War lore (if you can call it lore), then you’ll know that a key event in Marcus Fenix’s life was his time spent in the infamous COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments) prison, The Slab. Judging squarely from the cover image below, we can only guess that the hefty looking gentleman being carried off in chains is our gruff protagonist Marcus. Whist a prequel based around this area of Marcus’ history would be an intriguing step, when you think about it, the story could be rather limited… but who knows?

There are other, more interesting stories a Gears of War prequel could flesh out. Before the Locust, the COG were at war with the UIR (Union of Independent Republics). A lot of this is fleshed out in the numourous novels that have been written by Karen Travis. These stories were my personal favourite parts of the Gears of War universe and to see it transferred over to video game form would be great. Plus, when you think about it, it’s a story that can branch out further than one based around The Slab.
